Unfortunately the mic was about three inches higher than my leg could reach and I just did a complete somersault like a twat (vagina) / They were less hygienic days, weren't they? / Oh, oh, yeah, really un-hygienic. Friday, 3rd of June ... 9 P.M., BBC 4, Friday, 3rd of June, and every Friday after that. UK's Best Part-Time Band. We worked on it together. Basically, I was the host of it, and I went for weeks in tour buses ... uh ... with various legends of the music industry, which is where you come in, Midge, you were one of them, Jazzy B was another, / ... and ... Mr. Hook / and P ... and Peter Hook. We went around for a week around Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland ... / All the Celticy bits. / All the Celticy bits, we mopped up, didn't we? / ケルトっぽいとこをすべてカバーした / And ... um ... we had a good time, I would say. We are in ... uh ... / I mean, it's BBC 4 budget, so, it's ... you know, nothing special. / Yeah. / But we ... we had ... uh ... we are getting on now. __ __ __ we had some restaurant meals, we had some café meals, / __ __ / but we also ate some ... quite a lot in the back of the van, / we did eat a lot in the van / as I remember / we had a little table in our, like, tour bus __ __ __ we would sit in the back there, and, um ... / chat / yeah / like a little picnic / Welsh cake, __ I seem to remember ... was, you treated me to a Welsh cake, trying to bribe me to get some Welsh bands through the ... to the next level. / Barry, __ __, it worked. / Really? / Two Welsh cakes (and) almost all went through. / The BBC are OK with this, are they? / 俺に、ウェールズのバンドに投票させるためかも知れなかったが、ウェールズのケーキをふるまってくれた / それは成功した。たった2個のウェールズケーキでな。 / BBC でそれを言っちゃまずいんじゃないか / Oh, no ... oh, ... It was __ ... / I think it was more like a fly-on-the-wall documentary than a competition. / Definitely. / You know, it was great ... the whole ... the whole crux (the balancing point, the most essential point) of this, which you haven't explained __ __ / Tell us __ __ / we__ got / our country __ just ... just full of great artists who have never made the transition to become __ full-time musicians because it's a difficult thing to do, and, for a variety of reasons, they haven't, you know, done ... gone down that route, but, in a time-honoured sense/fashion, they haven't given up the thought of playing music 'cause it's a love, it's a joy, and, you go and see some of these artists, / 行って、見てみたら / and they're astoundingly good. ... You know, just because they don't say, "I'm a musician full-time. It's my thing.", it doesn't mean they're not very good at what they do. They were exceptional. And we ... you know the ... the stuff that we saw ... I mean, I don't know what Hooky / Jazzie B saw, but the stuff __ we saw was just spectacular / あいつらが何を見たか知らないが、少なくとも俺がみたやつは ... / you know. / Hmm. / it was such a joy. And you wouldn't tell me anything about it before we went in to see the ... the event / Nuh. / you know, we would sit our little bus ... __ __ __ __ / OK. ... Uh ... / you're gonna see an all-girl band / you, and then we'd ... we'd be subjected to whatever we opened the door to, / Huh, / and it was ... and it was great. I mean ... on ... on ... a ... as a level, it was fantastic, and it was a real ... it held a mirror up to the music industry / 音楽業界は考えを改める必要があるんじゃないか / the fact that these artists are out there, doing this brilliantly and they can't do it for a living ... it's just sad, really, isn't it? / Well, we thought ..., yeah, it was, in a way, sad, ... I mean ... kind of ... but it ... it felt ... felt like a celebration, it felt like a documentary, the programme. If you watch it on BBC 4, 9 P.M. Friday, is coming up, UK's Best Part-Time Band. They're totally happy with what they're doing. They're married with kids / they've got __ jobs / you know, whatever / totally happy / time / they're still dreaming even after 30 years of playing, they've still got the dream ... __ __ every different kind of shape and size and age and gender and everything, race and mu ... music and ... __ such variety, we saw. / They are still playing, __ __ / Yeah, / I mean, I'm sick to death of people coming up to me and saying, "Oh, I used to play / 昔は私もやったものですが、てのを聞くのに、本当にうんざりしているんだ。昔ってなんだよ。ものってなんだよ。プロになれなかったからって、それが何だというんだ？ただただ音楽をやる喜びを味わうだけのために音楽をやれよ、やり続けろよ、って、いつも言いたくてしょうがないんだ。 / and I think / what do you mean / "used to" / Why don't you take "used to" out and just go and play. I think, the thing is, with musicians, as opposed to, say, a perform___ like actors ... um ... we've all seen loads and loads of good bands or covers bands, whether it be at a wedding or a function or a gig ... I mean, I've done gigs with brilliant covers bands, um ... but, with, say, acting, it's like, people who don't make it as actors ... if you go and see a ... an amateur dramatics performance, invariably, is awful. Do you ... do you know what I mean? / __ __ ... I've never really been. / __ my mom used to be involved in, sort of, amateur (dramatics). I used to have to go and watch, I mean, torture (The experience was torture (This "torture" is adjective.)). She played Cinderella when she was about 42. It was embarrassing. I wouldn't ... I wouldn't polish it (to improve something) too much, but, you know, the standard of the people out there is just __ __ absolutely incredible.
Now then, seeing as I've got you here, Midge Ure, / I wasn't gonna do this / you can see, and everybody / for yourself, I've got a plastic bag, a bag for life for about 5 or 6 years, in which I carry around snippets of newspapers that I then do or don't do on the show. Phil Lynott / singer __ __ Thin Lizzy / and I was a big Thin Lizzy fan from the early day, and ... uh ... and, I got a phone call in the studio, saying, Phil was going to call me __ he was in America __ he's gonna call you in ten minutes / so he called me / Midge, uh, you know, Gary Moore's not in the band any more, you know, __ __ opening up for __ (John) __ special guest __ we're playing these mega dome places / he said, "Can you come out and finish the tour as a guitarist?" / I thought, "Wow! I've never been to America." / So, I ... I ... Bernard Rhodes, who became The Clash's manager, and he said, "Look, my mate's around the corner, and I'm sure he'd love to talk to you about a band, this project he was doing, and the mate in the ... in the car around the corner was Malcolm McLaren. I mean, I didn't know who he was. He was just a really weird, effeminate-looking guy. / But did they know who you were? / No. / So, you just __ ... just coming out of a shop ... just coming out of a shop __ __ __ / they ... they stopped me ... / they ... they stopped me because of __(like) everybody else at the time __ had long hair and flared trousers / / and I was wearing drain-pipe jeans __ __ that kind of, you know, uh, James Dean quiff. (Bryl Cream) So, they stopped me because of how I looked, and ... uh ... he talked ... he talked about / I can't believe that. / out of a record shop / done anything. I didn't know anything. / Do you regret that? Do you regret turning that down? / No. / can you imagine me __ playing with Johnny Rotten in the Sex Pistols? / No, I can't. It's not right. It's just / if the whole Sid and Nancy thing had turned out different / ... Yeah. ... I can't, but ... You are a celebrity out of context in that band, uh, which brings me on to my feature. __ ... one of the feature(s) ... a long-running feature we have on this show __ __ years and years and years ... it's called Celebrity Out Of Context Bingo. ... It's not, in any way, bingo ... as some ... somebody pointed out very angrily the other day ... um ... it's just ... a ... cele ... Have you seen a celebrity out of ... totally out of context, sort of, ironically out of context? ... Right? Um ... and, you in Thin Lizzy is a bit like that, or you in the Sex Pistols would be like that. I'll give you ... Right? / Yeah. __ __ __ / This was over the summer holidays. So, to earn pocket money, I would (used to) go and help. I was about 12 years old. My jobs were to make tea, tidy up and paint. Our first job was to paint the outside of the house, and, Paul Whitehouse had asked for his house to be painted light blue. ... I'm not sure if this is out of context or just quite a funny story.
